About the project: Depolarizing Public Debates

Depolarizing Public Debates

The project „Depolarizing Public Debates: Developing Tools for Transformative Communication“, led by Prof. Dr. Michael Brüggemann and coordinated by Hendrik Meyer and Louisa Pröschel, started in 2023 and was funded by the privately financed think tank "The New Institute" until 2024.

In this project, we worked with researchers from various institutions to investigate the extent to which journalistic reporting and digital media networks can contribute to the polarization of discourses on climate and sustainability debates, and the role of (AI-assisted) moderation in the depolarization of online debates. In our Hamburger Impulsen zur Depolarisierung medialer Debatten", we use academic and practical perspectives to formulate ideas about how journalistic reporting and community moderation can contribute to a constructive culture of debate.

This research project led to the merger of the participating researchers into the Transformative Communication Research Group, which will continue to deal with the topic of social polarization in times of transformation and mediatization as part of various research projects in the future.
